Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth — Review
I wrote this review for the North Devon Journal in 2014, and repost it here after its 2022 rerun at the Apollo Theatre in London. "Magnificent" (New York Times), "The best new play of the decade" (The Times) and an "Instant modern classic" (Daily Telegraph): such was the hype surrounding Jerusalem, the 2009 multi-award winning smash hit by Jez Butterworth, that people were sleeping on the concrete outside the theatre the night before tickets were released. "Blimey," thought I. "This I've got to see." But how? Not living in London or New York I didn't get the chance first time round, and wondered if I ever would. So when I heard it was being performed locally I was excited.
